Snowbasin continues to lead the Ski Utah resorts with its current base over 10 feet--even besting Alta by a few inches! The storm that passed through on Monday and Tuesday this week dropped another 18" of Utah's finest snow, for a season total of 339". The sun is out, spring is in the air, conditions are beautiful, and the slopes are uncrowded.

PHENOMENAL SNOW--34" storm total!

This was the sight that greeted me on awakening yesterday morning.....more accumulation on my deck railing than I've seen in the four winters I've been lucky enough to spend in the upper Ogden Valley--easily a foot of snow!

Driving up to Snowbasin, I passed the no longer readable stop sign and marveled at the winter wonderland while cautiously negotiating the slippery roads.

It snowed 18" during the day on Tuesday, for a storm total of 34" in 48 hours and a current base of 137".....amazing snowfall! Knowing the mountain certainly has its advantages when the terrain becomes difficult to see due to reduced visibility, and even the trail maps are no longer readable due to the snowbanks obscuring them!

An Amazing Powder Week

After five powder days in a row, I'm finally taking the day off to give the knees a rest and get caught up on everything that didn't get done while I was out showing out-of-town guests the lay of the land. Of course they appreciated the fact that the sun came out part of the time, allowing them to enjoy the scenery. The picture above was taken off of Hidden Lake Lift at Powder Mountain, last Tuesday--a perfect time to head to the trees!

The picture on the right was taken from the Strawberry Gondola, at Snowbasin, after we'd already had a couple of runs....you can see that there was no crowd from the one lonely line below the gondola.

They have a saying in Hawaii....."Lucky you live Hawaii". Well, I think the local version has to be "Lucky you 'board/ski Utah", where we enjoy Utah's trademarked "Greatest Snow on Earth"!

Down and out and missed out on the Pow!

The fact that I came down with the second cold in a month curtailed my snowboarding action for a few days.....you can see from the picture above, taken last Tuesday while down in Ogden, that we got a real dump. The pictures below were taken the day before, here in the Valley. Though
it may not be very clear in the photo, the picture on the right is that of a deer, taking refuge on someone's front porch in Green Hills.

Sorry there are no pix of the great day I had up at Powder Mountain yesterday...the whole top half of the mountain was in a cloud, but the 5" of fresh snow was heavenly and, having been there enough times, I can read that mountain in Braille.

The snowfall has eased off in the past couple of days, after a string of powder days from Sunday thru Friday, giving us the opportunity to see the sun again--a welcome change considering the cold temperatures we've had over the past few days.

Christmas was a blustery, snowy day with almost no one on the slopes. The Christmas revelers came out in force over the past couple of days, but the snow is great and the lines have moved quickly as both Snowbasin and Powder Mountain opened more terrain as of today, with both mountains pretty well completely open now.

Too much Powder....No time to post!

On the left was the view from Becker chair this morning--you can see that the 16" of new snow that fell during the day yesterday had been enjoyed, by the number of tracks on Centennial at 10AM. But deep, untracked powder was abundant and at times, problematic, as I'd made the mistake of leaving my Burton Fish at home, not realizing how deep it was going to be again today!

Though the Christmas visitors are in evidence, there are still plenty of lines that haven't been touched.

Let's hope the Christmas storm is as good as this last one was and, while you've got your feet up enjoying those football games and letting that Christmas dinner digest, it's a great time to check out Utah Resort Reservations' lodging options for Snowbasin and Powder Mountain visitors. They're calling it a hyperactive jet stream!

After a day or two of partly cloudy skies, earlier in the week, we're back on the storm path--last night's weather report was using the term "hyperactive jet stream" to describe the storm pattern bringing moisture from off the west coast and dumping snow on the Wasatch front. Whatever it may be, bring it on! Snowbasin and Powder Mountain were hit the hardest yesterday, with 10" of snow reported in the past 24 hours on this morning's Ski Utah report.

Powder Mountain opened more terrain yesterday, having opened Sundown lift for night skiing earlier this week, and will hopefully have the whole mountain open with the storms predicted to continue over the next 7-10 days.

Ever notice how difficult it is to get motivated to take off your gloves and pull a camera out of your pocket when it's blowing snow at a 45 degree angle and you're anticipating a powder run?!?

Powder, Powder Everywhere

Didn't even have to look at the Ski Utah report this morning....the deck railing report was 6" when I looked out the window.

Yesterday was my first day up at Snowbasin this season and what an incredible start to the season. Though conditions were cold, it made for perfect snow and the 'Basin has gone from barely being open to phenomenal conditions, in the course of two storms.

More snow is on the way, and Powder Mountain opened for night-skiing yesterday afternoon with more terrain hopefully opening soon.

Derek and "Big Wave" Dave Johnson advanced the sport of stand-up paddling to a new level on Monday. Though Strawberry has not officially opened yet this season, that didn't stop the guys from taking a run through the untracked snow there, and the paddles came in handy when they got to the bottom and still had to traverse some flat ground to get to where the car was parked off of Trappers Loop. I think they should submit these shots to Surfer magazine and show those stand-up paddlers in Hawaii how it's really done!

8" Snowfall at Snowbasin Today

The first true winter storm swept across northern Utah today, leaving 8+" of fresh snow in its wake at Snowbasin. More snow is predicted overnite, as well as on and off over the course of the next week....."unsettled weather" is what they call it on the evening news. However, I think that for many of us, we have more of a sense of calm, with things being as they should be, than we've had for the past month!

Powder Mountain still hasn't opened, but this unsettled weather pattern is predicted to continue, so hopefully it won't be long until it does.

Snowbasin and Wolf Mountain now open!

With the weather turning cold enough to accommodate snow-making efforts at both Wolf Mountain and Snowbasin, both resorts opened over the weekend.

Though I'm still recovering from the welcome-back-to-Utah cold I've had since Thanksgiving, the snow in the weather forecast is bound to get me out there soon. Looks like those of us who have family members who are seasonal employees of Snowbasin or Powder Mountain can at least be grateful for the fact that we'll be able to relax and enjoy Thanksgiving Day in the company of our loved ones, though the postponed opening of both resorts for lack of snow is an overriding disappointment.

Snowbasin rescheduled opening day to Friday, December 5, while Powder Mountain is awaiting Mother Nature's change of mood--from good to bad, or vice versa, depending on your viewpoint....

Early November Storms Hold Promise for Late November Opening at Snowbasin

Those October snowfalls seemed to be nothing more than a tease when followed by so many warm days, which were appreciated only by my friends Peg and Pete who were trying to avoid filling their propane tank in anticipation of the natural gas line to their Ogden Valley home being completed! Now that they made the sacrifice of buying enough propane to tide them open, the heavens can open and let that snow fall.

Snowbasin is not posting the snowfall totals on their website yet, so you'll have to make your own best guess based on these pictures from their webcams; but if Mother Nature will continue to cooperate, we should be on our way to a wonderful Thanksgiving Day opening.....now that's something to be grateful for!!!

Another big storm swept across northern Utah this past weekend and these pictures, taken by Julie and "Big Wave Dave" Johnson on Sunday morning, are reminiscent of last January......check out the accumulation on the lower branches of this evergreen!

Though no snowfall reports were posted on the websites for Ski Utah, Snowbasin, or Powder Mountain, the webcams for the resorts still show nice coverage today, and it sure looks like it must be close to a foot on the lower branches of this tree.

It may be hard to say good-bye to the last of the warm weather, but the snowfall this weekend was a welcome sight to powder lovers!
